Features

Thus the Beauceron is powerful, but nevertheless also sporty. The strong legs and paws can also easily carry the Beauceron over long distances.

Due to the (half) erect ears, which never rest against the head, and the watchful, but still friendly look, the Beauceron makes a very self-confident and attentive impression.

In addition, the self-confident appearance is emphasized by the dense coat, which is 3 – 4cm long. The coat with the dense undercoat also serves as a protective function against bad weather and cold winters.

There are three different color variations of the Beauceron: 1. black with tan markings, 2. blue with tan insignia and 3. gray spotted with black and tan, this is the so-called harlequin variant, which is influenced by the ,,merle gene”.

In all three color varieties, it is so that the legs and paws are tan. Therefore, the Beauceron is also called ” Bas Rouge“, which means “Red Stocking” in German.

The double dewclaws of the Beauceron are as characteristic of him as his “red stockings”. Due to the fact that they are set low, they increase the area of the hind feet. When the Beauceron was mainly kept as a herding dog, the dewclaws gave him a secure hold during fighting. Even if today the dewclaws have lost this necessity, they are still a testimony to the purity of this breed.

The life expectancy of the dogs is about 10 years.

Personality

The Beauceron is a very self-confident animal and therefore a born guard and protection dog. Originally, this self-confident and strong dog breed was kept as a herding dog. The Beauceron could easily herd a flock of 200-300 animals, fearlessly protecting not only the flock but also the shepherds. Because of its former role as a shepherd dog, the Beauceron is still known for being an independent, but also stubborn and sometimes bullheaded dog. Nevertheless, he will gladly submit to his owners once he has accepted his master or mistress as pack leader.

Although the Beauceron can be dominant, he is a friendly, sensitive and people-oriented animal. While he loves his mistress or master and is very protective of his owners, he is more distant and wary of strangers, but not aggressive.

As a working dog, the Beauceron is also not only intelligent, but also hardworking and temperamental. He likes to work with his humans, sometimes even to the point of complete exhaustion.

Posture

Since the Beauceron is a large and strong dog, which can be quite dominant and stubborn, it requires a strong hand, which can control and lead the independent dog. For this reason, it is important that you not only manage to keep up with this bundle of energy mentally, but also physically.

In addition, it is important for a species-appropriate attitude with the Beauceron that you occupy yourself sufficiently with him and move. For example, training as a service or protection dog would be ideal for this active dog who is willing to work. If you don’t have time to start training your four-legged friend, dog sports such as agility are a good way to keep your pet busy.

If the Beauceron is challenged enough physically, but also mentally, then he is also easy to train. The Beauceron is very interested in pleasing you, as his master or mistress, and to fulfill his duties dutifully. Nevertheless, the Beauceron is not suitable for beginners, because he belongs to the so-called “late developers”, which means that his young phase is longer than in other dog breeds. Thus, his education also requires more patience.

Being a lover of people, the Beauceron can also be easily accustomed to children.

Nutrition and care

The diet of the Beauceron is uncomplicated. It has no special requirements. You should only pay attention to a healthy and balanced diet. As food is suitable both dry – and wet food with a high meat content. If you are a fan of barfing, then the Beauceron is also a good choice.

The care of the Beauceron is also uncomplicated. It’s best to get your dog used to grooming rituals while he’s still young. Coat, ears, claws, teeth and gums should be checked and cleaned regularly.

The Beauceron is a hardy and strong dog, therefore no particular hereditary diseases are known in him. However, like any large and heavy dog, he is prone to elbow and hip dysplasia.

History

The Beauceron first appeared as a French shepherd dog in the Beauce towards the end of the 19th century.

In France, the use of shepherd dogs has already had a long tradition. Shepherding shepherds, especially itinerant shepherds who frequently changed the place of grazing, even then depended on the help of herding dogs. They have tried to improve the potential of these dogs by crossing the most docile, fearless and intelligent dogs with each other and then continue breeding with these dogs. Since then, the Beauceron has hardly changed in the last hundred years. Even today, breeders do not try to change or adapt him.

The Beauceron is also known in France as Berger de Beauce, Chien de Beauce or Bas Rouge.

Conclusion

Even though the Beauceron has a dominant and powerful appearance, it is still a perfect family dog. If you are willing to spend enough time with your four-legged friend and you can and want to take the time for his education, then you have found a wonderful companion for many years with the Beauceron.
