Even though the Biewer Terrier looks small and delicate, its personality is not that of a well-behaved lap dog. The Biewer Terrier has a fair amount of self-confidence that can keep its owner or owner quite busy.
The Biewer Terrier is so small that it is easy to overlook with a height of 18-22cm and a weight of just 1.8-3.6Kg. The fur of the four-legged friends is their trademark. Besides the extraordinary tricolor markings in black, white and gold, which extends over the whole body, the Biewer Terrier also has a very long coat without undercoat. Due to the lack of undercoat, the dogs hardly shed and are not subject to shedding. Therefore, they are very suitable for allergy sufferers.
In the middle of the back, the coat of the small terrier breed parted. If the dogs’ hair is not trimmed from time to time, the hair can reach the floor.
The hair texture of the coat is smooth and silky.
The physique of the animals is petite, compact and solid. At the same time, however, his short legs are quite stable and, with enough exercise, also strong.
In addition to the coat, the Biewer Terrier is characterized by its typical beady eyes and small black snub nose, as well as the relatively small head, which in turn has the typical upright, V-shaped ears.
The life expectancy of the animals is 12-15 years.

While the small dog breed is affectionate towards his master or mistress, he remains suspicious of strangers outside his pack. He may even exhibit aggressive behavior when encountering other dogs or small animals. However, this can be avoided with adequate education.
The Biewer Terrier may be small and have short legs, but it is not satisfied with small walks. The spirited four-legged friend wants to explore nature, be active in sports and also mentally. Dog sports such as dog Frisbee or agility are particularly suitable for this purpose. If you spend enough time with your four-legged friend, you can keep him even in a city apartment.
When training your terrier, make sure you don’t coddle him too much as a handbag or lap dog. Otherwise, the petite dog breed can quickly turn into a difficult prince or princess. With the right dog training, however, the intelligent and playful verbeiner becomes a loyal companion.
For the people-oriented dog, anti-separation anxiety training is also useful.
The Biewer Terier is relatively undemanding as far as its diet is concerned. The ideal food includes a mixture of meat, vegetables and fruit. It is best to divide your four-legged friend’s meals into 2-3 meals a day. This relieves the stomach of your four-legged friend. In addition, nausea can be prevented as well as the life-threatening and feared gastric torsion.
When grooming your terrier, make sure you give his signature coat a good brushing at least once a day.
You should also have the coat trimmed several times a year so that it is not constantly dragged across the floor. Every fourteen days your quadruped should be bathed and shampooed.
Due to the lack of undercoat, you can save yourself the extra grooming in times of coat change.
In addition to the coat, it is important that you regularly check the eyes, ears, mouth and claws of your four-legged friend and examine them for inflammation.
Known hereditary diseases in the Biewer Terrier include: Distichiasis, Patellar Luxation and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA).
In the eyes, it can also cause lens displacement, which in turn results in glaucoma. Likewise, corneal inflammation – and ulcers can occur
It was not until 1984 that the breed Biewer Terrier was created by an accidental genetic mutation.
The Biewer family from Germany discovered a tri-color puppy with a black – white and golden coloring in the litter of their two purebred Yorkshire Terriers. As a result, they decided to continue to selectively breed the coat expression and initially named the new breed ,,Biewer Yorkshire Terrier”.
Soon the new breed gained some attention, although the breed standard was originally missed. And even though breeding was initially made more difficult by the recessive gene, the tri-color puppies soon became popular abroad.
As the first breed ever, the Biewer Terrier was clearly delineated as a separate breed based on genetic testing.
Today, however, the quadrupeds are not officially recognized by either the FCI or the VDH. Only the American Kennel Club (AKC) accepts the cute dog breed since January 2021.
Due to its self-confident and lovable nature, the Biewer Terrier is not only the optimal companion for active people, but also for families with children.
However, when buying a Biewer Terrier, you should keep in mind that despite its size, the little four-legged friend needs a lot of time and attention so that it is sufficiently encouraged.
For this, the little terrier then feels comfortable both in the countryside and in a smaller city apartment.
