The cost of a dog sitter varies greatly from person to person. They depend on the dog caretakers themselves and are based on the duration of care and the dog’s needs. If the dog sitter takes care of your dog for several days, you should also factor in higher costs. In any case, make sure to make an individual arrangement to the satisfaction of both parties. This is because there is no fixed rate of payment to which both dog sitters and dog owners must adhere.
The most important prerequisite for doggy daycare is certainly the love of animals. But that alone is often not enough to be successful as a dog sitter. Dog sitters need the appropriate expertise and must also have a high level of organizational skills, sensitivity and a sense of responsibility.
What you definitely need in addition to become a perfect dog sitter: Experience with dogs (even difficult ones), empathy and a congenial way to even deal with difficult people.
As a professional dog sitter you also need: a business registration and in some states a certificate of competence.
Ideally, you will get to know the dog and its owner at a no-obligation appointment prior to the initial care. This way you can get to know each other first. Then you can see if you guys get on and are on the same page when it comes to dog training.
In order to open a kennel, it is first necessary to complete some formalities. There are numerous requirements for keeping and handling dogs that can be found in the protection of Animals and dog regulation. Defined are, for example, the conditions that enclosures and boxes must meet, how the room to move about in and the activity of dogs should be and at which locations a kennel may be opened at all. In purely residential areas, for example, this is not permitted for reasons of noise and odour protection. To verify that all boarding and grooming requirements are met, a certificate of competence must be provided. If you have training in animal care or as a veterinary assistant, this may suffice as proof. The kennel is finally approved by an official veterinarian after the basic permit has been issued and the business for the kennel has been registered. Accordingly, it is important to be well prepared for upcoming reviews in order to avoid unnecessary complications.
It is especially important to carefully plan both the concept of the kennel and the actions you want to be visible with. And: Especially with regard to pets, customer satisfaction should always come first.
